Autumn
Autumn 1-
"I wonder what the Ancient Greeks did for us..."
This term, Year 6 will step into the shoes of historians as they explore the fascinating world of Ancient Greece, asking the key question: What did the Greeks do for us? Through hands-on investigations of artefacts and historical sources, children will develop their understanding of the Ancient Greek civilisation and place it within a wider historical narrative. They will compare the city-states of Athens and Sparta, learn about the origins of the Olympic Games and discover the many ways in which Ancient Greece continues to influence modern life today.
In English, we will begin the year by strengthening our sentence construction and grammar skills to ensure children have a secure foundation for their writing. Our class text, Who Let the Gods Out?, will inspire a range of writing opportunities, including diary writing that allows pupils to write creatively and thoughtfully from different perspectives.
In Mathematics, we will start with place value, developing a deep understanding of numbers and the number system. Children will then focus on securing fluency in the key calculation strategies needed for Year 6, building confidence and accuracy when working with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In Science, pupils will study the human circulatory system, learning how the heart, blood and blood vessels work together to keep us healthy. They will also explore the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle choices on the human body, helping them to understand how to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.
Our Art lessons will be inspired by Ancient Greece as children investigate the designs and patterns found on Greek pottery. They will use these ideas to create their own ceramic pieces, developing their artistic techniques and creativity.
In PSHE, pupils will look ahead to their exciting final year at primary school. They will reflect on their strengths, set personal goals and consider how they can make the most of the opportunities and responsibilities that Year 6 brings. This work will help children develop resilience, confidence and a positive mindset for the year ahead.
