History at Greenfields
Intent
At Greenfields, our bespoke History curriculum is carefully designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and nurture a strong sense of identity and belonging among all pupils. Through engaging and inclusive historical enquiry, we aim to empower children to see themselves as part of a rich and diverse narrative. In History, we strive to provide pupils with: A secure understanding of the history of the British Isles, with a particular focus on Nottingham’s role and development within this context. ;Insight into migration and movement, exploring the push and pull factors that have shaped communities across time. ;Meaningful encounters with diverse cultures and histories, reflecting the varied backgrounds and heritage of our pupils and the wider community; Opportunities to explore themes of social justice and inequality, considering how these issues have impacted the lives of people in the past.
Implementation
History at Greenfields is taught with a clear focus on progression and chronological understanding. Pupils revisit and build upon prior learning, enabling them to develop a coherent sense of historical time and context.
Learning is organised into themed blocks in Autumn 1, Spring 1, and Summer 1, with topics chosen to create purposeful cross-curricular links. Each unit begins with an Immersion Day to introduce core knowledge and spark curiosity through hands-on experiences, followed by enquiry-based learning that builds disciplinary understanding
Throughout the term, teachers sustain pupils’ enthusiasm through enriching activities, educational visits, and holistic experiences that deepen understanding.
Teachers follow medium-term plans that outline essential knowledge and skills for each unit. However, planning remains flexible and responsive to pupils’ interests, backgrounds, and emerging needs. An end-of-unit assessment is used to inform teachers what the children know and remember about the topic.
